This conference is about making traditional and historic buildings more energy efficient and sustainable without putting them at risk of unintended consequences. It will highlight what could happen when you don’t get it right and what is best practice in the way we use and treat buildings including energy efficiency retrofit. It will reveal some of the latest research, decision making tools and guidance.

About the speakers

Nathan Blanchard

John Edwards

Since April 2014 John has been a Director of Edwards Hart Consultants where he leads on building surveys, technical analysis, energy efficiency, conservation and training for clients across the British Isles. Prior to that John was Assistant Director of Cadw, the Welsh Governments Historic Environment Service, whereas the professional lead on building conservation and sustainability he initiated and led Cadw’s very first live research project into the energy efficiency of traditional buildings. Prior to joining Cadw John worked for English Heritage at which time he co-founded the STBA. A Trustee of the IHBC, STBA Steering Group and expert panel member, conservation accredited by the RICS and a Chartered Environmentalist, John sits on the RICS Sustainability Group and the UK Green Construction Panel. John has also authored best practice guidance and standards which ranges from the latest British Standard for building conservation of which he is lead author to the National Occupational Standards for the UK Governments Green Deal.

Colin King

Colin is employed by the BRE as Director for Wales, with key responsibilities of being the lead officer on housing and building solutions in the new build and refurbishment sector focussing on energy, hygrothermal performance of walls, condensation, damp and defect recognition. He is the Technical lead on the DECC funded research programme into the performance of solid walls before and after insulation, leading the research into unintended consequences, he is a co-author of the recent BRE guidance on Best Practice Detailing when undertaking external wall insulation and he is a member of the DECC Technical Advisory Group on moisture risk in buildings, and sits on the Building Regulations Part C steering Group with DCLG
